How to Host the Perfect Indian Dinner Party

A Feast Made for Sharing
Few things bring people together like an Indian feast. The food is generous, colourful and built for the middle of the table, which makes it perfect for entertaining. Hosting an Indian dinner party can feel ambitious, but with a little planning it is one of the most rewarding meals to share. Here is how to do it well.
Plan a Balanced Menu
The secret to a great spread is balance. Rather than several similar dishes, aim for variety across texture, richness and heat.
- A starter or two: grilled tandoor bites or street-food style snacks to begin
- A rich main: a creamy or deeply spiced curry as the centrepiece
- A lighter dish: a vegetable or lentil dish to balance the richness
- A showstopper: a biryani or a whole grilled dish to impress
- Sides: rice, breads, raita and chutneys to tie everything together
- Dessert: something sweet and not too heavy to finish
Cook Ahead Where You Can
The best hosts are relaxed hosts. Many Indian dishes actually improve overnight as the spices settle, so curries and dals can be made a day ahead. Marinate meats and paneer in advance, prepare chutneys early, and leave only the rice, breads and final touches for the day itself.
Get the Drinks Right
Offer something to cool the palate alongside the spice. A salted or sweet lassi is traditional and welcome, while citrus-led cocktails and spiced sodas pair beautifully. Always have plenty of water and a no and low option for everyone at the table.
Set the Table for Sharing
Indian food is at its best served family-style, with everything in the middle for guests to help themselves. Use large platters and bowls, keep breads warm, and give everyone a chance to try a little of everything. The relaxed, communal feel is half the joy.
Keep It Simple
You do not need twenty dishes. A well-chosen handful, balanced and generous, will always beat an overcrowded table. Cook what you are comfortable with, and let the sharing spirit do the rest.
